SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS YOU CAN TRY!

Fake News Story:The next time that you are in a social group, make up a fairly realistic news story, and ask the others about it. My favorite is the hit and run of a State House Representative. I like to start out by asking, "Did anyone see that story about the State Representative that got killed in the hit and run accident?" One out of five people will say yes. I will then ask those who said yes, "Did you see what State he was from?" One out of five of those people will give you a state.People do not like to appear that they do not keep up with social happenings. Many people will tell little white lies just to look knowledgeable.

Don't Stand So Close to Me

Middlemist, Knowles & Matter (1976) designed an experiment to test how the speed and flow of men's urination in a public bathroom was affected by invasions of personal space.

They forced unknowing urinators to use one out of the 3 of the urinals provided, then one person who was in on the experiment stood either directly next to the subjects or one urinal away, and sometimes was not present at all.

Hidden in a stall was the “urine measurement officer” Equipped with a specially designed periscope hidden in a stack of books ready to measure the urine streams of unknowing test subjects.

The experimental confirmed the following: With no one present, unselfconscious urinators' average onset of urination was 4.8 seconds, with the accomplice present one urinal away, mildly self-conscious urinators' average onset of urination took up to 6.2 seconds. Finally with the accomplice in the next urinal, it was 8.4 seconds before bashful toilet-goer's could relieve themselves.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Good things come to those who wait. I may have been the 1st kind of kid who gobbled up the marshmallow right away.

BRAVE ENOUGH TO BE YOURSELF?

The Setup:
Solomon Asch Experiment- Was a study to test the power of Conformity. Subjects were told that they would be participating in a vision test, along with a handful of people. Participants were shown pictures, and individually asked to answer simple and obvious questions. The catch was that everybody other than the subject was in on it, they were told to give answers that were obviously wrong answers!

So would the subject go against the crowd, even when the crowd was clearly incorrect?

The Result:
Questions the subjects were asked were like the puzzle shown here:

Photobucket

All they had to do was say which line on the right matched the one on the left. As you can see, its not rocket science Exhibit 1 very clearly matches A.

Despite the fact the answer is OBVIOUS, 32 percent of subjects would answer incorrectly if they saw that three others in the classroom gave the same wrong answer. Even when the line was plainly off by a few inches, it didn't matter.

OPINION: People should really learn to trust themselves a bit more, this is like saying two plus two equals five, when we all really know it equals four. I could understand if the subject matter was more difficult and the test subject really did not know the answer, but this is ridiculous.

WOULD YOU STILL ANSWER INCORRECTLY JUST BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE DID?
